HC Verdict a Slap in the Face of Congress, Says Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad, Sept 19 (Maxim News): Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy welcomed the Telangana High Court’s verdict disqualifying Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, describing it as a “slap in the face” of the Congress and BRS over defections.

The High Court on Friday set aside Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar’s decision rejecting petitions seeking Nagender’s disqualification. The court held that Nagender, who was elected from Khairatabad on a BRS ticket in the 2023 Assembly elections, incurred disqualification after contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad as a Congress candidate while continuing as an MLA. The court also declared the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacant.

Kishan Reddy said Nagender should have resigned as an MLA before switching parties and contesting the Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket. He said the verdict showed that legal provisions on defections could not be ignored.

Kishan Reddy, Bandi Sanjay Target Congress and BRS

Kishan Reddy said both Congress and BRS should review their approach to defections. He also referred to the earlier switching of former ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy and Talasani Srinivas Yadav during the BRS government and questioned the political practices of both parties.

Bandi Sanjay Kumar also welcomed the High Court judgment and described Nagender’s disqualification as a victory for democracy. He criticised the Congress government over the handling of the disqualification proceedings and alleged that the Assembly Speaker had not acted independently.

The High Court verdict followed petitions filed by BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy and BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy challenging the Speaker’s decision. The court directed that its order be communicated to the Assembly Speaker and the Election Commission.

The ruling has left the Khairatabad Assembly constituency vacant and could lead to a by-election, subject to the Election Commission’s schedule.
