After Women, Free Bus For Elderly, New Scheme Soon In Telangana?

Free Bus |  Hyderabad, Oct. 4: The Telangana government is considering extending free bus travel to senior citizens, following the implementation of the Mahalakshmi scheme that provides free travel to women on Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses.

The proposal is being examined in response to requests from elderly people and welfare associations. Free travel could help senior citizens, particularly those in rural areas who depend on public transport to access hospitals, government offices and other essential services.

However, the government has not yet announced a final implementation date or issued detailed guidelines for the proposed facility.

Telangana Free Bus Travel Plan Raises Eligibility Questions

Several details remain under consideration, including the minimum eligible age, the types of buses covered and whether the benefit would apply to travel between districts.

Officials will also need to determine how the government would reimburse TGSRTC for fares under the proposed scheme. The corporation already operates free travel for eligible women under Mahalakshmi, making the funding mechanism an important consideration for any expansion.

Andhra Pradesh currently provides a 25 per cent fare concession to senior citizens aged above 60, according to reports. Telangana is considering a broader free-travel benefit, although its final scope has not been confirmed.

The proposal comes amid wider demands from senior citizens’ organisations for stronger welfare measures, including better healthcare, financial security and a dedicated welfare corporation. At a recent programme marking the International Day of Older Persons, representatives also sought free bus travel and special identity cards for elderly residents.

If approved, the proposed scheme could ease travel expenses for older people who regularly commute for medical treatment and other essential needs. Until the government issues formal orders, however, senior citizens should continue to follow the existing TGSRTC fare and pass rules.
