Kolkata to Host 19th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas
Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915.
According to the MEA, the 2027 convention will build on previous editions. It will focus on strengthening ties between India and its global diaspora and recognising their contributions.
The MEA said further details about registration and the programme will be announced soon. Indian embassies and consulates can provide immediate assistance to interested participants.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention was first organised in 2003 under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It was established to connect with the overseas Indian community and strengthen its engagement with India.
Since 2015, the MEA has organised the convention as a biennial event. Theme-based conferences are held during the intervening years.
The convention facilitates exchanges of knowledge, skills and experience among members of the Indian diaspora. It also provides opportunities for networking across different sectors.
President Droupadi Murmu will confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards and preside over the valedictory session.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is the highest honour given to NRIs, Persons of Indian Origin, or organisations established and run by them. It recognises contributions that enhance India’s image abroad and support Indian communities.
