Hyderabad, Oct. 6 (Maxim News) : Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced on Tuesday that the state government is seriously considering extending free RTC bus travel to elderly men.
He made the announcement at the World Elderly Day celebrations held at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad. The move would expand the existing Mahalakshmi scheme, which currently provides free bus travel only to women and girls.
According to Ponnam Prabhakar, the government is actively working on a free bus pass system for elderly citizens.
He said the transport needs of the elderly, who have served society throughout their lives, are being given serious consideration. He added that the government has prepared a proposal in this direction after receiving requests from various quarters seeking concessions for senior citizens.
The Mahalakshmi scheme, introduced by the Telangana Congress government, allows women and girls to travel free on RTC buses across the state.
The scheme has been widely seen as successful. The government is now looking at extending similar benefits to elderly men as a next step in welfare expansion.

If implemented, the scheme will benefit economically weaker elderly citizens and those living alone.
It will particularly help senior citizens who travel frequently for medical appointments and healthcare needs.
The scheme will also reduce dependence on others for daily travel and allow the elderly to manage their own needs independently.
The government has not announced a formal implementation date for the proposal.
Further details are expected as the plan moves through official approval processes. (Maxim News)
