Hyderabad, Oct. 6: Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha has strongly accused the state government of exercising deliberate discrimination in issuing press accreditation cards to Urdu media journalists. Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad, the TRS chief highlighted that Urdu holds the official status of the second language in Telangana.
Kavitha criticized the administration for failing to live up to its public claims of being minority friendly and supportive of Urdu linguistic rights. Consequently, she pointed out that the government has restricted accreditation to a cap of merely three media cards per district for Urdu journalists.
High Court Challenges Mount Against Disparity in Urdu Media Accreditation
Meanwhile, the discriminatory accreditation guidelines have already landed in legal trouble. The Telangana Urdu Working Journalists’ Federation (TUWJF) has challenged the state’s restrictive accreditation rules in the Telangana High Court, contesting the unfair caps imposed on Urdu journalists compared to other language media.
Additionally, Kavitha highlighted that several established Urdu publications operating for over 15 to 30 years are now facing severe administrative hurdles. Furthermore, the government has halted or delayed the periodic renewal of long-standing media credentials for these senior journalists.
Consequently, the Telangana Rakshana Sena chief demanded that the state government immediately eliminate regional biases and accord equal status to Urdu media journalists. Wrapping up her address, Kavitha cautioned that failure to rectify these administrative lapses promptly would result in severe political and social backlash for the ruling establishment.
