Four Students Die in Vrindavan Gurukulam Tank Accident

Mathura: Four students died after entering a water tank at a residential Sanskrit gurukulam in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday night. Another student was rescued and is undergoing treatment after the incident, which reportedly involved suspected toxic gas inside the tank.

The incident occurred around 10 pm at Panini Sanskrit Gurukulam in the Chaitanya Vihar 2 area. The students had entered a nearly 12-foot-deep tank after noticing a foul smell.

The deceased were identified as Manu Katare, 22, Vishu Sharma, 19, Aryan Pandey, 16, and Devansh Sharma, 17. The surviving student, Rudraksh, was initially taken to the district hospital before being referred for further medical care.

According to police, one student entered the tank first but did not return. Four others subsequently went inside in an attempt to rescue him. They also became unconscious and could not emerge from the tank.

People at the gurukulam eventually pulled all five students out and rushed them to hospital. Doctors declared four students dead.

Toxic Gas Suspected as Police Investigate Gurukulam Tragedy

Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said the students entered the tank after noticing the foul smell. Police are examining CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events.

District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh said preliminary information suggested that poisonous gas inside the tank may have caused the deaths. However, authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident.

The district administration has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials are also examining the gurukulam’s management and operating arrangements.

The institution reportedly had more than 200 enrolled students, with around 100 residing on its premises. Students from Class 6 to Class 12 reportedly studied there.

Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations and are contacting the families of the deceased. The gurukulam’s operator reportedly left the premises after the incident.

Authorities said further legal action would depend on the findings and complaints received from the victims’ families.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognisance of the incident and directed officials to provide necessary assistance to the affected families. The investigation will examine how the accident occurred and whether any safety lapses contributed to the tragedy.
