Hyderabad, Oct 9 (Maxim News): The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will stage a protest outside the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Hyderabad on October 10. The party is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revision.
The BRS has raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. It has alleged large-scale voter deletions in constituencies represented by its MLAs and demanded an independent inquiry into the process.
KTR Seeks Supreme Court Intervention
BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged irregularities. He also called for an independent judicial investigation by a sitting judge.
“Nothing is greater than the Constitution of India. And no Indian citizen can be stripped of their right to vote. Gyanesh Kumar must go. No individual is above the institution,” Rama Rao said in a post on X.
He questioned what he described as attempts to protect the Chief Election Commissioner at the expense of citizens’ voting rights.
“This nation has seen many individuals come and go, and it has stayed strong, it has survived beautifully. So why this desperation to protect one man?” he asked.
Rama Rao said Gyanesh Kumar and anyone attempting to create what he described as a “quasi-system” undermining the country’s democratic foundations should step aside.
Harish Rao Says Election Commission Must Ensure Public Confidence
BRS Legislature Party deputy leader T. Harish Rao also demanded accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner.
He said democracy was bigger than any individual or government. He described the Election Commission as the backbone of Indian democracy rather than a shield for those in power.
“Gyanesh Kumar must take responsibility. If the Election Commission cannot command public confidence, the CEC must resign,” Harish Rao said.
Referring to Articles 324, 325 and 326 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951, Harish Rao stressed the need for a credible, impartial and inclusive electoral system.
“No eligible voter can be arbitrarily denied their right to vote,” he said.
The proposed protest on October 10 is part of the BRS campaign over the electoral roll revision process. The party is seeking an independent investigation into its allegations and the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
