Telangana Drought Crisis: BRS Targets Congress Government

Hyderabad, Oct. 29: The BRS has accused the Congress government in Telangana of incompetent governance, alleging that poor water management has worsened drought conditions across the state. The party claimed that crops were drying up, reservoirs were losing storage and people were facing difficulties accessing drinking water and electricity.

The criticism comes amid growing concerns over the impact of rainfall deficits and El Niño-related conditions on agriculture and water availability. The BRS alleged that the government had failed to take timely steps to conserve river water and fill reservoirs to meet the state’s needs.

Telangana Drought Crisis Raises Concerns Over Water Management

The BRS criticised the Congress government for blaming El Niño for the drought, arguing that inadequate maintenance of irrigation projects and poor planning had contributed to the situation. The party claimed that repeated warnings about conserving water flowing through the Godavari and Krishna rivers had not received an adequate response.

According to the allegations, several reservoirs that previously held substantial water stocks are now facing declining levels.

The party also claimed that farmers in areas dependent on the Manjeera project were struggling to find water for agriculture and livestock, while the Singur project was approaching dead storage levels.

The Opposition further alleged that people in several areas were protesting over drinking water shortages and power supply problems. It warned that continued water scarcity could create additional difficulties for Hyderabad if reservoir levels and supply arrangements were not improved.

The BRS also questioned why water had not been lifted at Kannepalli and demanded that the government utilise the Kaleshwaram project infrastructure to address the crisis. It argued that timely pumping and better management of available water resources could have reduced the impact on farmers and households.

The party urged the government to take immediate measures to improve water availability, protect crops and ensure adequate drinking water supplies. The allegations highlight the political dispute over drought preparedness and irrigation management in Telangana, while the effectiveness of proposed relief measures remains a key concern for farmers and residents.
