Nagpur MLC Election Results: Congress Stuns BJP

Nagpur, Oct. 29: The Nagpur MLC election results have dealt a setback to the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra, with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) winning three of the five seats that went to polls, while the ruling alliance secured two. The Congress victory in Nagpur, a traditional BJP stronghold and home turf of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has triggered a political debate.

Nagpur MLC Election Results Spark BJP-Congress Clash

Congress candidate Abhijit Vanzari won the Nagpur Graduates’ constituency, defeating BJP candidate Sudhakar Kohli by a margin of 3,271 votes. The results were announced on Thursday after more than 40 hours of counting.

The victory is significant for the Congress, as Nagpur is considered a stronghold of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Despite campaigning by Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the BJP failed to retain the seat.

The result has also intensified the political exchange between the BJP and Congress. Congress leaders have criticised the BJP following its defeat in Fadnavis’ home constituency and described the outcome as a sign of the party’s declining political strength.

The Congress also responded to criticism from BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the declaration of results for 12 MLC seats on Wednesday. The BJP had criticised the Congress after it failed to win any of those seats.

Modi had made a satirical social media post referring to the Congress’s allegations about electronic voting machines (EVMs) and its demand for ballot-paper voting.

The Congress countered that criticism by highlighting its victory in Nagpur, where the election was conducted through the ballot system. It asserted that the result challenged the BJP’s political claims and predicted that voters would remove the party from power in 2029.

The Nagpur result is expected to intensify political competition between the ruling alliance and the opposition in Maharashtra, particularly as both sides seek to draw broader conclusions from the MLC election outcomes.
