Diwali 2026 | Diwali is the festival of lights, celebrating the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival also marks an auspicious occasion to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the deity associated with wealth and prosperity.
As families prepare their homes for Diwali 2026, traditional Vastu practices offer simple suggestions. These practices focus on cleanliness, organisation, lighting and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
According to Vastu Shastra, a clean, bright and well-organised home encourages a peaceful environment. Here are six traditional Vastu tips to consider during your Diwali preparations.
Diwali 2026 | Six Vastu Tips for a Prosperous Diwali
1. Keep the main entrance clean and welcoming
The main entrance holds special significance in traditional Vastu beliefs. Keep the main gate free from obstacles and avoid storing heavy items or footwear near the entrance.
Remove dried plants and repair cracks or damaged areas around the doorway. Keep the entrance clean, attractive and clutter-free.
You can also place a Swastik or Om symbol on the wall to the right of the main door. A colourful Rangoli at the entrance adds to the festive atmosphere and traditionally welcomes Goddess Lakshmi.
2. Clean your home and remove broken items
Diwali cleaning offers an opportunity to organise living spaces and remove unwanted belongings. Discard broken crockery, damaged decorative items and electronic appliances that no longer work.
Organise cupboards, storage areas and unused corners. Traditional Vastu guidance also recommends keeping the North-East area clean, light and clutter-free.
3. Mop floors with sea salt before Dhanteras
Some traditional household practices recommend mopping floors with water mixed with sea salt before Dhanteras.
This is considered a symbolic cleansing practice. Keep the home fresh, clean and organised as you prepare for the festival.
4. Place diyas in traditional directions
Lighting diyas is an important part of Diwali celebrations. Traditional Vastu beliefs associate their placement with prosperity, health and positive energy.
You can place diyas in the four cardinal directions: North, East, South and West. Also, light a diya in the centre of your home, known as the Brahmasthan.
A diya in the puja room is traditionally lit before beginning Diwali prayers. Vastu beliefs associate the North direction with wealth and prosperity. The East direction is traditionally linked with good health and spiritual growth.
5. Represent the five elements at the Brahmasthan
Vastu Shastra recognises five elements, commonly known as the Pancha Bhootas. These elements represent water, fire, earth, air and space.
For Diwali, some traditional suggestions involve creating a symbolic arrangement. You can place a small bowl containing water, a lit diya, fresh green leaves or flowers, white crystals and a metal coin.
Keep the arrangement simple. Ensure the Brahmasthan remains open, light and free from heavy objects.
6. Dispose of used diyas responsibly
Collect the diyas used during Diwali celebrations the following morning. First, ensure every diya is completely extinguished and has cooled down.
Place the used diyas in a separate bag. Hand them over to sanitation workers or dispose of them responsibly according to local practices.
Welcome Happiness and Prosperity This Diwali

A clean entrance, colourful Rangoli and traditional auspicious symbols create a welcoming festive atmosphere. These simple practices can also become part of your regular household cleaning routine.
Diwali is not only about decorating homes and lighting lamps. It is also a time to embrace cleanliness, hope, positivity and happiness.
May this festival bring peace, prosperity and success to every home.
