Hyderabad/ Chandigarh, June 9 (Maxim News): The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) protested against Delhi Police FIR against the veteran journalist, analyst and commentator Vinod Dua on a complaint filed by Bhartiya Janata Party leader Naveen Kumar on 4 June under various sections of the IPC including section 290 (public nuisance) for his comments on the handling of Delhi riots.
In a statement issued here today, IJU President K Sreenivas Reddy and Secretary-General Balwinder Singh Jammu said the FIR was filed against the senior journalist to send a signal to other journalists that any comment or criticism against the ruling party and its top leaders including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah would not be tolerated.
“It is a direct attack on the freedom of the press and freedom of expression. The police should have thrown out the politically-motivated complaint as it was tendentious and amounts to an abuse of the process of law to stifle criticism, fair comment, and contrary views. Ministry should not be allowed to frighten journalists for their calibrated opinions and comments,” the IJU leaders said.
The Indian journalists Union (IJU) demanded that the Delhi police should immediately withdraw the FIR file based on a politically motivated complaint. It called on the organisations of the working journalists and editors to unitedly resist the attempts to browbeat the journalists and the freedom of the press. (Maxim News)
