India is one of the top five birthplaces for naturalized US citizens

As of June 15, 2022, the United States had welcomed 6,61,500 new citizens, with India being the second largest country of birth for naturalised American citizens in the first quarter after Mexico.

“Throughout our nation’s history, the promise of both life and liberty, as well as the freedom to pursue happiness, has drawn millions from all over the world to call America home,” said M Jaddou, Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The USCIS welcomed 855,000 new US citizens in Fiscal Year 2021. According to the USCIS, as of June 15, Fiscal Year 2022, the agency had welcomed 661,500 new US citizens and made significant progress in reducing our naturalisation pending queues.

The USCIS announced that it will celebrate Independence Day this year by welcoming over 6,600 new citizens in over 140 naturalisation ceremonies between July 1 and July 8. On July 4, the United States celebrates its Independence Day.

According to US Homeland Security, 34% of naturalizations in FY 2022 Q1 were from the top five nationality countries: Mexico (24,508), India (12,928), the Philippines (11,316), Cuba (10,689), and the Dominican Republic (7,046). During this time, the United States welcomed 1,97,148 new citizens.

According to the report, the top five nationality countries (Mexico, India, Cuba, the Philippines, and China) accounted for 35% of naturalisations in FY 2021 Q1.

The fiscal year of the United States federal government runs from October 1 to September 30.

“At the USCIS, our belief in America’s promise is renewed on a daily basis as we work to welcome immigrants as our fellow citizens,” Jaddou said, adding that “our country will be stronger and more diverse as a result of the choice they have made.”

Mexico was the leading country of birth for people naturalising in 2020, accounting for 13% of the total, followed by India (7.7%), the Philippines (5.3%), Cuba (5.0%), and China (4.2 per cent).
