Uttam to represent Indian Parliament in UN Climate conference in Egypt on Nov 7

Hyderabad, November 2: Congress MP & former TPCC President Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with two other MPs, will represent Indian Parliament in the South Asia Parliamentary roundtable at the UN Climate Summit (COP 27) being jointly organised by the Climate Parliament and USAID, in Sharm-el-sheikh, Egypt from 7th to 10th November.

It may be mentioned that the COP 27, being held from 6th to 18th November, would be focussed on developing greater resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change to focus on challenges in the energy and climate policies that can be addressed through regional collaboration. Therefore, the South Asia Parliamentary roundtable is expected to strengthen the official country delegations to COP 27 through further inputs and recommendations.

The UN Climate Summit (COP 27) will deliberate on cross-border energy cooperation, sustainable development and the creation of a Regional Parliamentary Forum.

Uttam Kumar Reddy, in a media statement on Wednesday, informed that the objective of the meeting was to jointly deliberate on how regional energy cooperation in South Asia could be enhanced beyond bilateral agreements to ensure energy security and address climate change. This is a follow-up of the first South Asian parliamentarians’ meeting organised online a few months ago.

The Congress MP said that the participants of the meeting were expected to give inputs on the potential launch of a Regional Parliamentary Forum on South Asian energy co-operation next year. This meeting is of crucial importance as we have been witnessing huge changes in the climate in recent times. Citing an example, he said the extension of monsoon and excess rainfall in much of the country which led to massive flooding was an example of climatic change. Similarly, the severity of seasonal conditions like heat wave, coldwave, rainfall or drought would have a negative impact not only on the human lives in India, but it would also impact the entire economy. Therefore, he said it was in the interest of entire South Asian countries to work together to address the challenges arising out of climatic change.

Uttam Kumar Reddy informed that at least two parliamentarians from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka have been invited for participation in the meeting. He said that the UN Climate Summit would come up with recommendations and suggestions which offer solutions to the problems being faced now or which are likely to occur in future due to climate change.
