Serving people is my priority: CJI Chandrachud on first day in office

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on November 9 said he would endeavour to make the Supreme Court a “no-stress” court for everyone while responding to the congratulations of lawyers present in the courtroom on his first working day as top judge.

The three-judge Bench led by CJI Chandrachud however started the day’s court work with an apology for making the lawyers wait well past the scheduled time of 11.30 a.m. The Bench heard cases through most of the lunch break.

CJI Chandrachud was accompanied by Justices Hima Kohli and J.B. Pardiwala on the Bench.

Earlier in the day, Chief Justice Chandrachud told the media that his priority would be service to the common man.

He said the key areas would be to use more and more technology to sharpen the justice delivery system, reforms in the Supreme Court Registry and prompt listing of cases.

“It is a great opportunity and a great responsibility on my shoulders,” the CJI said.
