Hyderabad, July 10, 2025 — The investigation into the Kukatpally adulterated toddy case has intensified, with Excise Department officials confirming that the toddy consumed by victims was laced with harmful chemicals, leading to a public health scare and multiple fatalities.
According to officials, laboratory tests conducted on toddy samples collected from multiple outlets in Kukatpally have revealed the presence of toxic substances, affirming suspicions that chemical adulteration was the cause behind the tragic incident.
So far, five people have lost their lives, and 37 others have fallen seriously ill after consuming the contaminated toddy. Among them, 31 patients are undergoing treatment at NIMS Hospital, where doctors have reported that the condition of 27 patients is stable, while four are receiving dialysis due to complications arising from kidney damage.
In response, Excise officials have detained seven individuals, including toddy shop managers, and have registered cases under relevant sections of the law. The detained individuals are being questioned to trace the source and intent of the adulteration.
Officials have also assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. The chemical components used in the toddy will be identified in detail once forensic lab reports are fully examined.
This incident has raised alarms across the city, prompting calls for stricter regulation and quality checks on the sale of toddy and other locally brewed beverages. The Excise Department is expected to launch a broader crackdown on toddy outlets and unregulated compounds in the coming days.
