Hyderabad, June 5: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party, with BJP National President Nitin Nabin formally accepting his resignation on Friday.
Annamalai BJP Resignation Sparks Political Speculation
The resignation comes amid intense speculation about Annamalai’s political future. In a post on social media platform X, Annamalai announced that he would address supporters on Friday afternoon and share his views during an open interaction.
His announcement has fueled discussions that the former IPS officer may reveal plans for a new public movement or political initiative.
Annamalai, a former Karnataka cadre IPS officer, resigned from the Indian Police Service in 2019 before entering politics. He joined the BJP in 2020 and rapidly rose within the party, becoming Tamil Nadu BJP president within a year.
According to reports, Annamalai is working on a people’s movement focused on identifying, training, and mentoring young leaders across Tamil Nadu. Sources indicate that the initiative could later evolve into a political party. His non-profit organization, “We the Leaders,” is reportedly expected to serve as the foundation for the proposed movement.
Political speculation intensified following reports of differences over the BJP’s strategy in Tamil Nadu. Sources suggest that Annamalai favored an independent expansion strategy for the BJP rather than renewing ties with the AIADMK alliance.
Reports also indicate that he felt sidelined after being replaced as the state party chief and was disappointed at not being assigned a national role within the BJP. There have also been reports that he declined an offer for a Rajya Sabha seat.
Annamalai is expected to clarify his future plans during his scheduled social media address.
