Assam Cabinet Decides To Arrest Thousands Of Husbands In Coming 6 Months

Guwahati/Hyderabad, Jan 28 (Maxim News): As decided by the Assam Cabinet to register cases under the POCSO Act against men who marry girls below the age of 14, it also stated that action will be taken under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006 against those who marry girls between the ages of 14 to 18 years.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said that thousands of husbands will be arrested in the coming six months. It is a crime to have sexual relations with a girl below 14 years of age, even if the man is a legally wedded husband, he is warned that he is sure to go to jail.

Himanta Biswas Sharma spoke at a government function today, he said that the legal age of marriage for women is 18 years. In this context, he said that his government is committed to stopping early marriages and motherhood. He said that legal action will be taken against husbands who marry underage girls. Such husbands face life imprisonment.

Himanta Biswas said that the suitable age for motherhood is between 22 to 30 years. He said that if motherhood is not adopted at an appropriate age, it can lead to medical problems. (Maxim News)
