BC Reservation Stay: Next Steps After Receiving Court Order: Ponnam Prabhakar

The decision comes as a blow to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s government, which has been projecting itself as a strong proponent of social justice and inclusive governance.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said, “I didn’t expect the High Court to issue a stay.” He added that the state government will announce its future course of action “legally and judicially” after receiving a copy of the High Court’s interim orders.

Minister Ponnam emphasized that the state government acted with complete sincerity in implementing BC reservations. “Strong arguments were presented on behalf of the government. The government conducted a caste survey, set up a dedicated commission, and acted with complete sincerity in all aspects,” he said.

He reiterated that the Congress government is committed to ensuring 42 percent reservations for BCs in local bodies, describing it as part of the party’s long-standing commitment to social justice. “Congress is a champion of social justice,” Ponnam stated, reaffirming that the government would continue to defend its position both legally and morally.

Ponnam also pointed out that the delay in local body elections has financial implications for the state. “Due to the non-conduct of local body elections, funds that were supposed to come from the Center are not being received,” he explained.

Taking aim at the opposition, the minister questioned the silence of rival parties. “BRS and BJP should explain why they were not impleaded in the High Court,” he said, accusing them of double standards on issues of social justice.

Ponnam concluded by asserting that the Congress government remains resolute in its policy direction. “Under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, we will go to the elections with social justice,” he said, signaling the party’s intent to make the BC reservation issue a central theme in the upcoming polls.
