Hyderabad, Sept 23 (Maxim News): The Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to undertake a special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in all the states of the country. The EC has asked the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of the states to be ready for ‘SIR’ by 30th of this month.
The EC reminded that the voter list will have to be revised based on the last ‘SIR’ conducted in each state. In this regard, the EC has told the officials to keep the voter lists of the states published earlier ready. The EC has explained in principle that there are chances of starting the voter list cleansing program (SIR) by October-November.
The last ‘SIR‘ was conducted in Delhi in 2008, in Uttarakhand in 2006, and in Bihar in 2003. In other states, this process was completed between 2002 and 2004. CEOs of several states have already uploaded these lists on websites. Meanwhile, the EC has announced that after Bihar, ‘SIR’ will be implemented across the country.
In the backdrop of the Bihar assembly elections to be held later this year, the EC officials in the state recently launched ‘SIR’. It was conducted based on the 2003 voter list. The EC said that the primary objective of ‘SIR’ was to check illegal foreign immigrants and remove their names from the voter list.
However, the opposition criticized that this ‘SIR’ was brought to benefit the BJP and to weed out targeted voters. Due to this, the case came up for hearing in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court questioned the EC on why there was a need to conduct ‘SIR’ during the elections.
It warned that if ‘SIR’ is found to be illegal, it will be cancelled. It said that the final arguments will be heard on October 7 on the validity of the ‘SIR’ process in Bihar. While this case is being heard, the EC’s readiness to implement ‘SIR’ in all states has become a topic of discussion. (Maxim News)
