Delhi/Hyderabad, April 22 (Maxim News): A BJP delegation met the Election Commission (EC) over Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remarks during the Tamil Nadu assembly election campaign, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘terrorist’. It expressed strong objection to Kharge’s remarks. The BJP representatives complained to the EC that this was a highly controversial and personal insult. They demanded strict action against Kharge for violating the model code of conduct and a public apology. The delegation that met the ECI included Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal and others.
Speaking to the media on this occasion, Kiren Rijiju said that a high-level BJP delegation met the ECI. They said that they came here with great pain and anger. He said that the reason for this was the insult to Prime Minister Modi by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. He said that calling the Prime Minister a terrorist is an insult to the entire country.
Earlier, the BJP wrote a letter to the Election Commission on Tuesday over the controversy over Kharge’s comments. It said that Kharge’s comments amounted to a violation of the election code of conduct. It said that this was an offence under Section 175 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and his comments would constitute prima facie evidence to file a defamation case. It also sought a public apology from the Congress president.
Kharge’s explanation
During the Tamil Nadu election campaign, Kharge questioned the alliance between the AIADMK and the BJP and asked how the party had joined hands with Modi. He said that he did not believe in equality and justice. He criticized the AIADMK’s alliance with such people as weakening democracy. After the BJP reacted strongly to Kharge’s comments, he clarified. He explained that he never called Modi a terrorist, but that his intention was to say that he was terrorizing the people and political parties. (Maxim News)
