Hyderabad, Oct. 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday questioned the INDIA Bloc’s decision to hold a rally in Delhi on November 1 against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of risking hurt to Sikh sentiments by choosing a date associated with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned Gandhi’s insistence on holding the rally on November 1. He said the date carries deep emotional significance for the Sikh community.
“By creating a storm at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, what kind of salt does Rahul Gandhi want to rub into their wounds?” Prasad asked.
BJP Claims INDIA Bloc Allies Oppose Rally Date
Prasad alleged that several INDIA Bloc allies were unhappy with the decision to hold the rally on November 1. He claimed that some alliance partners had suggested postponing the event to a later date.
The BJP MP also said a virtual meeting was reportedly scheduled on October 22 to discuss the issue. However, he claimed the meeting was postponed because several alliance partners did not attend.
Prasad questioned the choice of date, linking it to the historical trauma of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His remarks were directed at the Congress leadership and the INDIA Bloc’s planned protest against alleged electoral-roll irregularities.
The BJP’s statements reflect its criticism of the rally’s timing. The allegations regarding opposition among INDIA Bloc allies were made by Prasad and were not independently established in the statement.
