Indore, June 9: A five day meeting of BRICS member nations began in Indore on Tuesday, with discussions focused on food security, climate friendly agriculture, agricultural trade, and farmer welfare.
The conference is being held under India’s BRICS chairmanship and brings together officials from member countries to address key challenges facing the global agriculture sector.
Officials of the BRICS Agriculture Working Group will hold deliberations until June 11. The inaugural session was led by Atish Chandra, Secretary of India’s Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Following the officials’ meeting, agriculture ministers from BRICS countries will convene on June 12 and 13 to discuss policy initiatives and cooperation in the sector.
The conference agenda includes food security, nutrition, farmer welfare, climate friendly smart agriculture, international agricultural trade, supply chains, digital agriculture, research, knowledge sharing, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
Officials said the member countries are expected to issue a joint declaration after the agriculture ministers reach a consensus on key issues.
BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping comprising 11 emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.
The meeting is being held in Indore and coincides with the Madhya Pradesh government’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of Farmer Welfare.
