Internet, June 9: Speculation over possible defections from opposition parties has sparked discussions about the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) prospects of securing a special majority in Parliament.
Reports in sections of the national media suggest that the NDA is exploring ways to strengthen its numbers in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The discussion has gained attention amid debates over issues such as women’s reservation and constituency delimitation.
A special majority in the Lok Sabha requires the support of two thirds of members present and voting, while the number of votes in favor must also exceed half of the total House strength of 543 members.
According to reports, the NDA currently has 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha. Speculation about a possible split within the All India Trinamool Congress has fueled discussions about whether the ruling alliance could increase its strength.
TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar recently claimed that 20 MPs support a separate grouping within the party. Media reports have suggested that such members could potentially back the NDA on specific parliamentary matters, although no formal announcement has been made.
Reports have also speculated about possible support from sections of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other regional parties under certain conditions. However, none of the parties concerned have officially confirmed any shift in support.
In the Rajya Sabha, the NDA is also seeking to improve its position on key legislation. Discussions intensified after the resignation of TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy. Media reports have linked the development to broader political realignments, though no official decisions have been announced.
Any change in parliamentary strength would depend on future political developments and formal decisions by the parties and lawmakers involved.
