Kolkata, June 9: The All India Trinamool Congress has appointed Kalyan Banerjee as its new chief whip in the Lok Sabha with immediate effect. The move comes after 20 of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs reportedly wrote to Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition as a separate group.
Party chief Mamata Banerjee has formally informed the Lok Sabha Speaker about the appointment and requested that the change be recorded in parliamentary records.
In her communication to the Speaker, Mamata Banerjee sought necessary steps to implement the appointment. As chief whip, Kalyan Banerjee will coordinate the party’s parliamentary strategy and oversee communication with TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha.
The development follows reports of internal differences within the party. A group of 20 MPs allegedly submitted a letter to the Speaker seeking recognition as a separate bloc and requesting appropriate seating arrangements in the House.
Meanwhile, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said the letter carried the signatures of 20 members. She stated that the MPs had sought recognition as a separate group in Parliament.
The TMC currently has 28 members in the Lok Sabha. According to the rebel MPs, recognition from the Speaker could have implications for their parliamentary status and future proceedings.
No decision from the Speaker’s office on the request has been announced so far.
