New Delhi, July 13: The Centre is examining Meta’s response regarding allegations of advertisements and content related to child abuse on Instagram, Union IT Secretary S. Krishnan said on Monday.
He stated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is thoroughly reviewing the explanation submitted by Meta and that appropriate action will be taken if required.
Speaking on the issue, S. Krishnan said the Ministry is scrutinising the report submitted by Meta from all angles before deciding on the next course of action.
“The explanation has been received and is under detailed examination. Appropriate action will be taken if necessary,” he said.
Earlier, the Central Government served notices to Meta seeking an explanation over reports alleging the presence of advertisements and content related to child abuse on Instagram.
The government directed the company to explain the measures being taken to detect, prevent and remove such harmful content from its platform.
In its response, Meta said it is deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to strengthen child safety on Instagram.
The company also informed the government that it is enhancing its advertisement review systems and content moderation mechanisms to prevent the circulation of harmful material and improve user safety.
The Centre is expected to decide on any further regulatory or legal action after completing its assessment of Meta’s submission.
