Hyderabad, July 2: Chicken and egg prices have increased sharply across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, putting additional pressure on household budgets. The price rise has made everyday non vegetarian food costlier for middle class and low income families.
Skinless chicken is now selling between Rs 300 and Rs 330 per kg in many parts of Hyderabad. Similar prices are being reported in Vijayawada, with some retail outlets charging even more.
Chicken prices push up household food costs
Egg prices have also increased over the past month. Retail prices have risen from Rs 6 to Rs 7 per egg to nearly Rs 8 each. A tray of 30 eggs now costs around Rs 240 in the retail market.
Poultry traders and industry experts attribute the increase to multiple factors. They say extreme summer temperatures have caused heat stress among poultry birds, leading to higher mortality and lower production.
At the same time, the cost of poultry farming has increased because of higher prices of maize and soybean, the main ingredients used in poultry feed. Many farms have reduced production due to rising input costs.
Demand has also increased with the wedding season and other auspicious events, resulting in higher orders from hotels, restaurants and function halls. The combination of lower supply and stronger demand has pushed prices upward.
Consumers say the increase has further strained family budgets that are already affected by rising prices of essential commodities and cooking oil. Many households are now reconsidering their weekend food expenses as chicken and egg prices continue to remain high.
