Hyderabad, April 29: Minor clashes and complaints of malfunctioning electronic voting machines were reported during the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on Tuesday.
Polling is being held for 142 Assembly constituencies across the state under heavy security arrangements.
Bengal Polling Witnesses Clashes And EVM Complaints
Reports of tension emerged from Chapra, Shantipur and Bhangar during the morning hours.
In the Entali constituency, a BJP candidate reportedly argued with polling officials and security personnel after a party representative was removed from a polling booth.
Officials said both BJP and Trinamool Congress representatives were later asked to leave the booth because of limited space.
In Nadia district’s Chapra area, a BJP polling agent alleged that Trinamool Congress workers attacked him.
Meanwhile, some voters in Howrah complained about malfunctioning EVMs at polling stations.
Videos circulating on social media showed paramilitary personnel dragging away a person during polling disturbances. Another individual was reportedly subjected to lathi charge during the incident.
Tension also prevailed in Shantipur after a BJP camp office was allegedly vandalised.
In Bhangar of South 24 Parganas district, a polling agent from the Secular Front allegedly was not allowed to enter a polling booth.
Abhishek Banerjee cast his vote at Mitra Institution in Bhabanipur and urged people to vote in large numbers.
He expressed confidence that the BJP would perform poorly in the elections compared to the previous Assembly polls.
Mamata Banerjee also visited polling booths in Bhabanipur and accused central forces of acting under instructions from the Union government.
She further alleged that observers from other states were functioning in favour of the BJP.
