Congress Surges in North Telangana Municipal Elections
Hyderabad, Feb. 15: Congress recorded significant gains in North Telangana in the recent municipal elections.
The party outperformed its earlier results in both Assembly and Parliament polls and secured major victories in key urban bodies.
Out of four corporations in the region, Congress won Ramagundam and Mancherial convincingly. In addition, the party secured a notable number of divisions in Nizamabad and Karimnagar corporations.
Congress Strengthens Position in Key Municipalities
In Nirmal municipality, located in BJP Legislature Party leader Maheshwar Reddy’s constituency, Congress registered a victory.
Moreover, the party has intensified efforts to capture the Nizamabad Corporation. Political circles suggest that Nizamabad may tilt in favour of Congress. In the 60 division corporation, Congress won 17 divisions.
In Adilabad district, Congress secured victories in Nirmal, Luxettipet and Chennur. Meanwhile, Adilabad, Bellampalli, Khanapur, Asifabad and Kagaznagar witnessed hung results. Compared to previous elections, Congress improved its performance significantly in the district.
In Nizamabad district, Congress won five out of seven municipalities. However, Bodhan and Kamareddy recorded hung verdicts. In Bodhan, Congress won 17 of 38 seats and is exploring alliances to secure the chairperson post. In Kamareddy, the party won 19 of 49 seats.
In the undivided Karimnagar district, Congress secured a majority in eight municipalities. Although it won most seats in Jagtial and Vemulawada, both municipalities resulted in hung councils. Party leaders believe coordination among local leaders could help secure these posts. In Karimnagar Corporation, Congress won 14 out of 66 divisions.
Mixed Results in Greater Hyderabad Periphery
In South Telangana districts, Congress won a large number of municipalities. However, the party did not perform as expected in municipalities surrounding Greater Hyderabad.
In Sangareddy, Rangareddy and Medchal districts, BRS secured more wards. In Ibrahimpatnam, despite having a Congress MLA, the party lost control. In Moinabad, Congress won 10 of 26 wards, while in Shankarpally it won 9 of 15 wards.

Similarly, Congress secured 8 of 20 wards in Ameenpur, 9 of 24 in Muduchintalapalli, 8 of 24 in Yellampet, 10 of 26 in Isnapur, 3 of 18 in Gaddapotharam and 6 of 18 in Indresham. However, in Sangareddy and Sadashivpet, senior leader Jaggareddy helped the party secure victories despite the presence of BRS MLAs.
Setbacks in MLA Represented Areas
Congress faced setbacks in certain municipalities where it has sitting MLAs. The party lost in Ibrahimpatnam, Thorrur, Tirumalagiri and Amangal. Moreover, several municipalities such as Narayanpet, Medak, Khanapur, Pargi, Bellampalli, Chennur, Vardhannapet, Vemulawada and Mahabubabad reported hung verdicts.
Party leaders stated that a review will be conducted to assess local conditions and the performance of MLAs in these areas.
Overall, the municipal results indicate Congress consolidation in North Telangana, while challenges remain in the Greater Hyderabad periphery and select MLA represented constituencies.
