Danam Nagender disqualification: BJP Welcomes Verdict

Danam Nagender disqualification | Hyderabad, Sept. 18 (Maxim News): The Telangana High Court on Friday disqualified Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, overturning the Speaker’s earlier decision that had allowed him to remain in the Assembly after switching from BRS to Congress.

BJP leaders welcomed the verdict and demanded that other MLAs who changed parties should also resign and seek fresh mandates from voters.

Danam Nagender won the Khairatabad seat in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections on a BRS ticket. He subsequently joined the Congress party after the Congress government came to power under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Many BRS members switched to Congress around the same time.

BJP MLA Eleti Maheshwar Reddy, who serves in the Telangana Legislative Assembly, and BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy had filed separate petitions in the Telangana High Court seeking his disqualification. The Speaker had rejected those petitions. A bench of the High Court led by the Chief Justice reversed that decision on Friday.

BJP MLA Eleti Maheshwar Reddy called the verdict a landmark for democracy. He said the court’s decision to overturn the Speaker’s ruling is written in golden letters for Indian democracy. He added that Congress leaders should come to their senses.

He also said the verdict is a slap in the face for those who tried to turn MLAs of other parties towards them. He reminded that the BJP had consistently fought for justice in this matter.

Eleti Maheshwar Reddy challenged MLAs who switched parties to resign immediately instead of approaching the Supreme Court. He said those who have faith in democracy should go back to the voters rather than seek legal relief. He announced that the BJP will file a public interest litigation in court on Saturday on related matters.

BJP leader and former MLA Chintala Ramachandra Reddy also welcomed the verdict. He described it as a victory of democracy and a slap in the face for Congress CM Revanth Reddy and the Telangana Assembly Speaker.

He said the verdict protects democratic values and respects the Constitution of India. He noted that this is the first such disqualification verdict delivered within six months of a petition being filed anywhere in the country, which he described as significant. He said the verdict is a victory for everyone.
