New Delhi, Oct. 21: The Delhi High Court referred to violent protests abroad while hearing a petition by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. They challenged the extension of their judicial custody.
A bench headed by Justice Subramaniam observed that police permission requirements serve purposes beyond restricting protesters. They also help prevent untoward incidents during demonstrations.

Das and Ranka were detained on October 13 while attempting to protest at Jantar Mantar. They challenged the extension of their judicial custody, which was initially granted until Monday and later extended until Wednesday.
Delhi High Court Questions Protest At Restricted Venue
The court questioned why the CJP leaders went to Jantar Mantar after authorities had declared it a prohibited venue for protests.
“There is a purpose behind setting up barricades. If you go ahead without considering them, there is a possibility that others will do the same,” the bench observed. It warned that authorities might struggle to control such situations.

The court also referred to protests abroad that reportedly escalated into violence. It mentioned buildings being set on fire and shops being looted.
“Police permits are there to prevent such things from happening,” the court said. It added that permission requirements could prevent others from joining protests and damaging the protesters’ reputation.

The bench said it would next examine the appropriate level of action against those who demonstrated in the denotified area.
During the hearing, the court asked about the ages of Das and Ranka. It also jokingly asked which age groups are classified as Generation Z and Millennials.
