Hyderabad, July 28 (Maxim News): Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Dr. Soumya Mishra, IPS, on Tuesday conducted an extensive inspection of key infrastructure, environmental, and rehabilitation initiatives at Cherlapalli, reaffirming the Telangana Prisons Department’s commitment to sustainable development, prisoner welfare, and skill based rehabilitation.
The DG began her visit by reviewing the Cherlapalli Lake Restoration Project, a joint initiative of the Telangana Prisons Department and HYDRAA, being implemented with financial assistance under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). She appreciated the significant progress achieved in restoring the lake ecosystem and commended the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders involved in the project.
During the inspection, Dr. Soumya Mishra identified poorly lit stretches along the walking pathway and directed officials to install solar lighting to improve safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for visitors.
The Director General later visited the Prisoners’ Agricultural Colony (PAC), Cherlapalli, where she reviewed the ongoing development of Swami Vivekananda Vanam. Expressing satisfaction over the pace and quality of the works, she stressed the importance of creating green spaces that promote environmental sustainability while contributing to the physical and mental well being of inmates.
She also inspected the proposed site for the construction of a Multipurpose Hall at PAC, which is aimed at strengthening correctional infrastructure and supporting inmate welfare activities.
At Central Prison, Cherlapalli, Dr. Soumya Mishra inspected various prison industries and production units. She interacted with prisoners engaged in vocational and industrial activities, appreciating their dedication and encouraging them to continue enhancing their skills. She said productive engagement and vocational training are key pillars of successful rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The DG further reviewed the progress of the proposed Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) within the prison premises. The institute is being established to provide industry oriented technical and vocational education, equip inmates with market relevant skills, and award nationally recognised certifications that can improve their employability after release.
During the inspection, Harichandana Dasari, IAS, Secretary to Government, Labour, Employment, Training and Factories Department, along with State Director of Factories Mohan Babu, Deputy Director of Industries Kalid Akhtar, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories Mohan Reddy, and Inspector of Factories Sridhar, reviewed the preparations for operationalising the Government ITI at the prison.
Throughout the visit and review meetings, the Director General was accompanied by Inspector General of Prisons N. Muralibabu, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Dr. D. Srinivas, Superintendent of Central Prison G. Pramod, and Superintendent of Prisoners’ Agricultural Colony D. Bharath.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Soumya Mishra said the Telangana Prisons Department is committed to transforming correctional institutions into centres of environmental stewardship, innovation, skill development, and rehabilitation.
She said initiatives such as lake restoration, green campus development, expansion of correctional infrastructure, promotion of prison industries, and establishment of the Government ITI reflect the department’s vision of empowering inmates with dignity, employable skills, and opportunities for meaningful reintegration into society while contributing to sustainable development.
