- Dimethyl Ether seen as cleaner option amid LPG concerns
Hyderabad, March 23: Dimethyl Ether has emerged as a possible alternative to LPG, offering a cleaner option amid growing concerns over gas supply. Scientists from BITS Pilani and Hyderabad announced that DME can be used as a substitute fuel, especially in the current situation linked to global tensions.
The development comes at a time when fears around LPG availability have increased due to the Iran-US war. Therefore, researchers have focused on finding sustainable and reliable alternatives. Their work suggests that Dimethyl Ether could help reduce dependence on LPG in the future.
Dimethyl Ether technology converts emissions into cleaner fuel
The research team, led by Sounak Rai, Head of the Department of Research and Innovation, along with Satyapal Singh and retired professor B.M. Reddy, worked on this project. They created plug gas emitted from power plants in a laboratory setting. They then developed a method to convert this gas into Dimethyl Ether.
The process uses bi-functional materials and hydrogen produced through water electrolysis. Therefore, the technology allows conversion of industrial emissions into usable fuel. This approach may help in both energy production and pollution control.
Scientists also highlighted the environmental benefits of Dimethyl Ether. They said that DME emits fewer pollutants compared to LPG. As a result, it can serve as a cleaner alternative for domestic and industrial use. Meanwhile, the development could support efforts to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
The research reflects ongoing efforts to explore new energy solutions. It also shows how scientific innovation can address both supply challenges and environmental concerns. However, further steps may be needed before large-scale use becomes possible.
For now, the findings offer a promising direction. Therefore, Dimethyl Ether may play a key role in shaping future fuel options. The announcement from scientists provides a new perspective on alternatives to LPG in the current scenario.
