Hyderabad, June 7: Senior urologist Dr Rahul Devraj has been appointed Director of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for a three year term. The appointment was announced through a notification issued by Principal Secretary, Health, Dr Christina Chongthu.
Dr Rahul Devraj succeeds senior surgical gastroenterologist Dr Bheerappa Nagari, who was appointed Director of NIMS in June 2023.
Dr Devraj currently serves as the Head of the Urology Department at NIMS. Under his leadership, the institute’s urology team has performed more than 2,000 kidney transplants, making NIMS one of the leading government sector renal transplant centres in the country.
The institute achieved a significant milestone last year when it successfully carried out the first robotic renal transplant in a government hospital in South India under Dr Devraj’s guidance.
Officials noted that NIMS has strengthened its renal transplant programme in recent years. The institute’s surgeons performed around 500 kidney transplants over the last three years, reflecting the growing capacity of the hospital’s specialised healthcare services.
Dr Devraj’s appointment comes at a time when NIMS continues to expand its advanced medical and transplant care facilities, serving patients from Telangana and neighbouring states.
