Environmental laws ensure a healthy society: Biswabhusan Harichandan

Vijayawada, March 25 (Maxim News): Addressing the delegates at the Conference on “Environmental Legislation in India – A Relook” organized by the Indian Conference of Intellectuals (ICOI) at the Gateway Hotel here on Friday, Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan said that the environmental regulation is one of the key public services that governments provide to their citizens, around the world. Governor Harichandan said the various Environment Acts ensure disposal of pollution causing waste material in a responsible way and lay emphasis on the need for protection and conservation of the environment and sustainable use of natural resources as reflected in the Constitutional framework of India and also in the international commitments of India.

The Governor said that Art. 51A of the Constitution of India, casts a duty on every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife, and to have compassion for living creatures. He further said that Art. 48A of the Constitution of India stipulates that the States shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and to safeguard the forests and wildlife of the country.

He further said that the environmental laws have been designed to benefit the society by pollution reduction in terms of health and other aspects, said the Governor.

Justice K. Sreedhar Rao, Former Chief Justice (acting) of Karnataka & Guwahati High Courts, Justice B. Krishna Mohan, Judge, High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Justice B. Siva Sankara Rao, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Judicial Preview Committee, Justice M. Seetharama Murthy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission, have also participated in the conference. R.P. Sisodia, Special Chief Secretary to Governor, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, Managing Director, APSRTC, S. Satyanarayana, CEO, AP Tourism Authority, were among those who attended the conference. P.D.T. Achary, Former Secretary General, Lok Sabha, gave the welcome address and K.M. Shiva Shankarachar, General Secretary, ICOI delivered the vote of thanks. (Maxim News)
