Sangareddy, June 13: Allegations of illegal fish ponds being developed in the Full Tank Level (FTL) lands of the Singur reservoir have triggered concerns over the quality of Manjeera water, a key drinking water source for Hyderabad and several districts in Telangana.
The Singur Multipurpose Project on the Manjeera River has supplied drinking water to Hyderabad, Medak and Nizamabad regions for decades. However, reports of encroachments and unregulated fish farming along the reservoir’s shores have raised questions about water safety and environmental protection.
Illegal Fish Ponds Allegedly Operating in FTL Areas
According to reports, multiple fish ponds have been dug in FTL lands surrounding the Singur reservoir in Andole, Vatpally, Manoor, Raikode and Nyalkal mandals.
Locals allege that encroachers are using reservoir water for pisciculture activities and feeding fish with chicken waste, spoiled eggs and other discarded materials. Environmental concerns have emerged over the possibility of such waste contaminating reservoir water that ultimately reaches consumers through Manjeera pipelines and Mission Bhagiratha.
Allegations have also surfaced that water is being pumped from the reservoir into these ponds and that electricity is being drawn without proper permissions.
The reports have sparked concerns among residents over the purity of drinking water sourced from Singur. Manjeera water has long been known for its quality and remains an important drinking water source for millions of people.
Citizens and environmental activists have called for immediate inspections by the concerned departments to assess any potential impact on water quality and public health.
Former Andole MLA Chanti Kranthi Kiran alleged that the encroachments were continuing with political support and claimed that officials had failed to act despite the large-scale activity.
He demanded a comprehensive investigation into the alleged encroachments and fish farming operations. He also called for strict action against those responsible and removal of illegal ponds from the reservoir’s FTL lands.
Authorities from the Revenue, Irrigation, Police and Electricity departments have not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
The issue is expected to draw attention as concerns grow over environmental protection and the safety of drinking water supplied from the Singur reservoir.
