In its order, the Supreme Court asked all local bodies across the country to ensure the removal of stray dogs from public places such as government hospitals, schools, sports complexes, and transport hubs. The court also clarified that sterilised dogs should not be released back into these high-sensitivity public zones.

According to a GHMC statement, civic teams on the first day of the drive caught and relocated 277 stray dogs from different government hospitals to GHMC-managed Animal Care Centres. Officials said that all rescued dogs would undergo sterilisation, vaccination, and medical observation before being housed permanently at these facilities.

The GHMC said the move aims to boost public health and safety while aligning municipal operations with the Supreme Court’s directive. The initiative also seeks to reduce the increasing risk of dog bites and improve hygiene conditions in hospitals.

Officials confirmed that the ongoing operation will soon be expanded to other public areas, including educational institutions and major transport hubs, over the coming days. The GHMC’s animal care teams will coordinate with hospital administrations and veterinary departments to ensure all sterilisation and care procedures comply with legal and welfare standards.
