Hyderabad Dengue Alert as Early Surge Threat Looms

Hyderabad Dengue Alert | Hyderabad, July 3 (Maxim News): Telangana health authorities have placed Hyderabad on high alert following a warning from the Union Health Ministry over a possible early surge in dengue cases. Officials said changing weather patterns, evolving mosquito behaviour, and a growing number of asymptomatic infections have made dengue a year round public health threat rather than a seasonal disease.

The alert follows a review by the Union Health Ministry after the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) reported 16,313 dengue cases across India by May this year. Moreover, the country recorded a 28 percent increase in new dengue cases during May, much earlier than the usual monsoon season.

Health officials said intermittent rainfall expected across Telangana could create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Unlike continuous rainfall, which washes away mosquito eggs and larvae, alternating spells of rain and dry weather allow stagnant water to remain undisturbed and support mosquito breeding.

Officials from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) explained that construction sites, rooftop layouts, government buildings, and other places where clean water collects have become major breeding grounds for mosquitoes in Hyderabad.

Authorities have urged residents to inspect their homes and workplaces regularly and eliminate stagnant water to reduce mosquito breeding.

Another major concern is the large number of asymptomatic dengue infections. Health officials estimate that nearly 80 percent of infected individuals show little or no symptoms. Although they may experience only mild fatigue or a low grade fever, these individuals continue to carry the virus in their bloodstream.

Mosquitoes feeding on such infected persons can transmit the virus to others who may develop severe dengue, making asymptomatic carriers a hidden source of community transmission.

Officials said this silent spread makes surveillance and disease control significantly more challenging.

The IDSP also noted that the primary dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, has adapted to urban lifestyles and now breeds mainly in clean water stored inside homes and commercial buildings rather than dirty drains or muddy pools.

Mosquito larvae are increasingly being found in refrigerator drip trays, indoor decorative plant containers, air cooler tanks, air conditioner condensate pipes, and other clean water sources. Since Aedes aegypti bites during the daytime, infections are now spreading in schools, offices, shopping centres, and public transport hubs.

Health experts further warned that dengue now circulates through four different virus strains, DENV 1, DENV 2, DENV 3, and DENV 4. Recovering from one strain does not provide immunity against the others, allowing people to contract dengue multiple times.

Repeated infections with different strains can significantly increase the risk of severe complications such as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS), which may lead to a sharp drop in platelet count, internal bleeding, plasma leakage, multiple organ failure, and even death if not treated promptly.

Officials have advised people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience persistent fever, severe body pain, vomiting, abdominal pain, bleeding symptoms, or unusual weakness. They also urged the public to maintain cleanliness around homes, prevent water stagnation, and cooperate with mosquito control measures to reduce the spread of dengue.
