Hyderabad Liberation Day | Hyderabad, Sept. 17: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday extended greetings on Hyderabad Liberation Day and paid tribute to those who died during the struggle that led to the integration of Hyderabad State with the Indian Union in 1948.
In a post on X, Shah greeted people of Karnataka on the occasion and remembered the martyrs of the movement. He described the day as a reminder of the struggle against the rule of the Nizams and Razakars and their role in the integration of the region with India.

September 17 marks the integration of the erstwhile Hyderabad State with the Indian Union following Operation Polo in 1948. The former Hyderabad State covered areas that now form Telangana, parts of Karnataka and the Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
Hyderabad Liberation Day Events in Telangana
The Union government is organising the main Hyderabad Liberation Day programme at Secunderabad Parade Ground on Thursday. Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan will attend as the chief guest.
Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar are among the dignitaries scheduled to attend. Ten Central Armed Police Forces contingents will participate in the march-past.
The programme will also feature a cultural presentation titled “Hyderabad Vimochanam”. Organisers have planned a collective singing of Vande Mataram and the felicitation of winners of a Hyderabad Liberation Day quiz conducted at the Salar Jung Museum.
A special exhibition has also been organised at the venue. It showcases historical episodes associated with the integration of Hyderabad State and themes related to national unity and integrity.
The Telangana government observes September 17 as Telangana Praja Palana Day, while the Centre marks the occasion as Hyderabad Liberation Day. The terminology and interpretation of the 1948 events have varied among political parties and groups.

The Centre formally notified September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day in 2024. The notification said the decision was intended to remember the martyrs associated with the integration of Hyderabad and to familiarise younger generations with the events.
