Hyderabad: A 27-year-old man from Banjara Hills allegedly lost Rs 99,018 from his bank account after a phone software update was automatically installed while he was watching Instagram Reels.
The victim, who lives near Orange Tree in Banjara Hills, told police that the incident occurred on the night of August 2. He reportedly continued using his phone after the software update was installed.
The following morning, the man checked his bank account and noticed that Rs 99,018 had been transferred through four separate transactions without his knowledge or authorisation.
Banjara Hills police probe suspected cyber fraud
The victim immediately approached the police and lodged a complaint after discovering the unauthorised transactions.
Based on his complaint, Banjara Hills police registered a case and launched an investigation into the suspected cyber fraud.
Investigators are examining the transactions and attempting to determine how the money was accessed and transferred from the victim’s account.
Police are also expected to examine the victim’s mobile phone and other digital evidence as part of the investigation.
The incident highlights the risks associated with suspicious software updates, links, applications and other forms of digital activity that can potentially expose users to cyber fraud.
Authorities have repeatedly advised users not to install software or applications from unverified sources and to immediately report unauthorised bank transactions to their bank and the cybercrime authorities.
