Hyderabad, Oct. 9: A retired employee from AS Rao Nagar in Kushaiguda allegedly lost nearly Rs 18 lakh in a cybercrime scam after fraudsters recorded a video call and threatened to circulate it on social media.
The accused allegedly used the recording to blackmail the victim and extort money. The fraud came to light when he attempted to transfer another Rs 2 lakh at a bank.

The branch manager noticed the suspicious transaction and alerted the police. Officers reached the bank and explained the nature of the cybercrime to the victim.

Police intervention prevented the transfer of another Rs 2 lakh. According to the report, around Rs 80 lakh remaining in the victim’s bank account was protected from further loss.
The incident highlights the risks of video call blackmail scams, in which fraudsters threaten to expose private recordings to extort money from victims.
