New Delhi, May 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said India is likely to receive 90 percent of the Long Period Average rainfall during the 2026 Southwest monsoon season.
The IMD released its second long range forecast for the monsoon and stated that most parts of the country may receive below normal rainfall this year. However, the Northeast region is expected to record normal rainfall during the season.

According to the weather office, the projected seasonal rainfall remains lower than the normal benchmark, indicating a weaker monsoon compared to previous years.
In its earlier forecast issued on April 13, the IMD had predicted 92 percent of the Long Period Average rainfall for the 2026 monsoon season.
IMD Forecast Raises Concern Over Monsoon Performance
The revised forecast comes amid concerns over rising temperatures and uneven pre monsoon weather conditions across several states.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring oceanic and atmospheric conditions that could influence rainfall activity during the coming months.
The Southwest monsoon is crucial for agriculture, water resources and power generation across India. Any shortfall in rainfall could impact crop production and rural economies in several regions.
The IMD is expected to issue updated regional forecasts and rainfall assessments as the monsoon season progresses.
