India Achieves 100 GW Solar Power Milestone, Local Manufacturing Grows
Delhi/Hyderabad, Feb 7 (Maxim News): India has reached a major milestone in its journey towards clean energy by surpassing 100 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar power capacity, the government announced on Friday. This achievement strengthens India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy and brings the country closer to its goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030.
As of January 31, India’s total solar capacity stands at 100.33 GW, with 84.10 GW under development and another 47.49 GW in the bidding process. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Prahalad Joshi, called this a historic moment for the country.
“In the past ten years, India has made huge progress in solar energy. Projects like solar parks, rooftop solar panels, and large-scale installations have changed the way we produce power. Today, we are not just reducing our dependence on fossil fuels but also setting an example for the world,” he said.
More Homes Using Solar Power
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is helping more households install rooftop solar panels, reducing electricity costs and promoting clean energy. So far, nearly 9 lakh homes have installed rooftop solar systems under this scheme.
India’s solar power capacity has grown tremendously in the last decade—from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025, an increase of 3,450%. In addition, hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) renewable projects are also growing fast, with 64.67 GW under development.
A Record-Breaking Year for Solar Energy
Solar energy is the biggest contributor to India’s renewable energy growth, making up 47% of the country’s total renewable capacity. The year 2024 saw record solar installations, with 24.5 GW of new capacity added, more than double the amount installed in 2023.
Some of the top-performing states in solar energy are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. The rooftop solar sector also saw impressive growth in 2024, adding 4.59 GW, a 53% increase compared to 2023.
India Becomes a Global Leader in Solar Manufacturing
India is also making great progress in solar panel manufacturing. In 2014, the country could produce only 2 GW of solar modules. Now, in 2024, production has reached 60 GW.
“With strong government policies and investment, India is on track to produce 100 GW of solar panels by 2030,” Minister Joshi said.
