India Ceasefire Role Urged By Finnish President

Hyderabad: India ceasefire role has come into focus after Finnish President Alexander Stubb urged New Delhi to help ease tensions in West Asia. He called for an immediate ceasefire as the conflict involving the United States and Iran continues to intensify.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Stubb stressed the need to stop hostilities and open dialogue. He said India could play an important diplomatic role in reducing tensions. “We need a ceasefire… I’m wondering if India can actually get involved. We saw Foreign Minister Jaishankar call for a ceasefire to calm things down,” he said.

Meanwhile, India has been actively engaging with Iran amid the rising confrontation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently held another round of telephonic talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. During the call, Araghchi briefed India on the latest developments.

He described the ongoing conflict as a result of what he called “aggressions” by the United States and Israel. He also said Iran intends to exercise its right to self defence. However, he warned that the situation could lead to wider regional and global impact.

India has been closely monitoring the situation. The government remains concerned about regional stability, energy supplies and the safety of Indian nationals. Therefore, New Delhi continues its diplomatic outreach.

Also, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian amid the escalating tensions. After the conversation, Modi said he conveyed India’s deep concern over the conflict and rising civilian casualties. He also stressed the need to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and maintain uninterrupted movement of goods and energy.

Stubb’s remarks also come after his recent visit to India from March 4 to 7, 2026. During the visit, he attended the Raisina Dialogue as the Chief Guest. He praised India’s growing global role and described it as “one of the world’s largest and most influential countries and the world’s largest democracy”.

He also called India a key strategic partner for Europe. He highlighted its importance in foreign policy, security and economic cooperation. Stubb further said India is among the fastest growing major economies.

Reflecting on India’s diplomacy, he said, “I believe personally that we should all become a little bit more Indian.” He also noted India’s role in peacekeeping and multilateral engagement.

Overall, India ceasefire role continues to gain attention as global leaders look for ways to reduce tensions and restore stability in West Asia.
