Toronto: A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was shot dead in what police believe was a targeted attack in Toronto, Canada. The victim, Navneet Kaur, was fatally shot in a public area on Friday morning, prompting a major police investigation.
According to Toronto Police, officers responded to reports of gunfire near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard at around 7:23 a.m. Emergency responders found Kaur suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical assistance, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suspect arrested, police probe motive
Police launched an extensive search operation using K9 units and drones to trace the suspect, who allegedly fled immediately after the shooting.
The accused, identified as 37-year-old Sharanjit Singh of Brampton, was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking, according to investigators.
Officials said the shooting took place outdoors in a public location and confirmed that they do not believe any additional suspects were involved.
An eyewitness told local media that they saw Kaur walking along Humberwood Boulevard when a man approached her, called out to her and briefly spoke with her before allegedly opening fire. The suspect then reportedly fled the scene carrying the weapon.
The witness said there was no visible argument or confrontation before the shooting.
Toronto Police’s Homicide Unit is continuing its investigation to determine the motive behind the killing. Authorities have appealed to anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
