Influenza Surge Alarms Hyderabad As Temperatures Fall
- Influenza rise linked to cold weather and viral fever symptoms
- Health advisory urges care for influenza and seasonal flu patients
A sharp rise in influenza-like illnesses has been reported in Hyderabad as temperatures continue to dip. Overcast skies and persistent cold weather have led to more patients visiting hospitals with viral fever symptoms. The trend has been rising for nearly two weeks, and doctors say the sudden change in climate is a major factor. Meanwhile, health officials have issued advisories to help the public manage symptoms and avoid complications.
Nursing homes, small clinics and major government hospitals have seen a clear spike in patient numbers. According to the input, Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital, Fever Hospital in Nallakunta and NIMS have registered many cases of high-grade fever, severe body aches, cough, headache and cold. These symptoms match common viral fevers and influenza-like illnesses. Seasonal flu is an acute respiratory infection, and it spreads easily when infected people cough or sneeze. Therefore, officials say early care can prevent further spread.
Doctors noted that most patients with seasonal flu recover at home with rest and fluids. However, the vulnerable groups face a higher risk. Pregnant women, children under five years, adults above 65 and people with chronic medical conditions may develop serious complications. Director of Public Health Dr Nayak said in an advisory that anyone in these groups who develops symptoms should visit the nearest Basthi Dawakhana. He added that timely medical care helps prevent severe illness. Also, doctors advised that people with chronic heart, kidney or liver conditions take a flu shot to recover faster if they fall sick.
Health officials stressed the need for simple preventive steps. They said people should cover their mouth and nose with tissue paper during coughing or sneezing. They also advised frequent handwashing with soap and water. Meanwhile, patients must avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth often, as this increases the risk of infection. They should stay away from public places if they have fever, cough or sneezing. Adequate ventilation is important in all settings to reduce transmission. Doctors repeated that people should stay at home and limit contact with others when sick.
The rise in influenza-like illnesses is expected to continue as winter advances. Therefore, the advisory encourages people to monitor symptoms early and follow basic hygiene measures. Hospitals are preparing for increased footfall as more residents seek treatment for fever and cold-related complaints. The surge has become a citywide concern, but officials say timely care and prevention can help control further spread.
