Hyderabad, Oct. 8: Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is set to challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the premium foldable smartphone market.
Both phones open into a 7.6-inch display. However, they differ significantly in weight, durability, cameras, software and charging.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US and goes on sale October 23. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899.99 and is already available. In India, the Duo starts at ₹2,99,900, while Samsung lists the Z Fold 8 from ₹1,79,999.
iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Take Different Approaches
The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch OLED cover display and a 7.6-inch inner OLED screen. Both support refresh rates of up to 120Hz.
Samsung offers a slightly larger 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch AMOLED inner screen, also supporting up to 120Hz.
Apple uses a matte finish on the inner display to reduce glare. Samsung uses an anti-reflective finish and a design aimed at reducing the visibility of the crease.
The biggest difference comes in handling. The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs just 201 grams.
Samsung’s foldable is also thinner. It measures 4.5mm when open and 9.7mm when folded. The Duo measures 5.2mm open and 11.3mm folded.
Apple has an advantage in rated protection. The Duo carries an IP68 rating, while the Z Fold 8 has an IP48 rating. Neither rating means the phones are permanently waterproof.
The camera systems also take different approaches. The Duo has 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide cameras. Samsung uses 50MP main and 50MP ultrawide cameras.
Neither standard model has a dedicated telephoto camera. Apple supports video recording up to 4K at 120fps with its main camera, while Samsung supports up to 8K at 30fps.
Battery comparisons are less straightforward. Samsung lists a 4,800mAh battery for the Z Fold 8. Apple has not disclosed the Duo’s battery capacity and instead claims up to 24 hours of typical use.
The Duo supports MagSafe wireless charging and can reach up to 50% charge in about 20 minutes with a suitable wired charger. Samsung supports 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging.
Apple’s foldable runs iOS 27, while Samsung uses Android with One UI.
The Duo also offers storage options up to 2TB. The Z Fold 8 is available with up to 1TB and offers 12GB or 16GB of RAM depending on the configuration.
For buyers who prioritise portability, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a clear weight and thickness advantage. Its lower US starting price is another consideration.
The iPhone Duo may appeal more to users already invested in Apple’s ecosystem, particularly those who value iOS, MagSafe, IP68 protection and the matte inner display.
The two phones therefore offer similar foldable screen sizes but target different priorities. The final choice will depend less on the small US price gap and more on whether buyers prefer Apple’s ecosystem and durability rating or Samsung’s lighter and thinner design.
