Hyderabad: The IRIS Dena sinking has drawn a sharp reaction from Iran after the country confirmed that a US submarine sank the Iranian frigate in the Indian Ocean. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said the United States would “come to bitterly regret (the) precedent it has set” following the incident.
The statement marks the first time the Iranian government has acknowledged the sinking of the IRIS Dena. The frigate reportedly went down off the coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. The comment was made on the social media platform X on Thursday.
Iran Reaction After IRIS Dena Sinking in Indian Ocean
Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi issued the warning while responding to the reported sinking of the naval vessel. According to his statement, the attack happened far from Iran’s territorial waters.
Araghchi wrote on X that “the US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores.” He also said the incident set a dangerous precedent. Therefore, he warned that the United States would face consequences for the action.
The Iranian minister also referred to the frigate’s presence in the region. He said the vessel was traveling as a guest of India’s Navy when the incident occurred.
Details of IRIS Dena Frigate Incident
According to the statement posted by Abbas Araghchi, the frigate was carrying nearly 130 sailors at the time of the incident. The ship was operating in international waters in the Indian Ocean when it was reportedly struck.
Araghchi described the strike as sudden and without warning. He wrote, “Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning.”
The foreign minister added another strong warning in the same message. He said, “Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret (the) precedent it has set.”
The comment came shortly after reports emerged about the sinking of the IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the statement has drawn attention as it represents the first official acknowledgement by the Iranian government about the loss of the frigate.
The situation has also raised concern because the incident occurred in international waters in the Indian Ocean. Iran’s remarks indicate that the development may affect tensions between the United States and Iran.
