Sinjil/Internet/Hyderabad, Oct 30 (Maxim News): Since Israel’s war with Hamas began more than two years ago, nearly 1,000 new barriers have been set up across the occupied West Bank, further restricting Palestinian movement and affecting daily life, according to the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission.
The Palestinian body reported that 916 gates, checkpoints, and walls were installed since the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. Residents say such a surge in restrictions is unprecedented since the 1967 Mideast War.
Impact on Movement
The barriers, including metal gates and roadblocks, have cut off travel routes between villages and cities. The United Nations documented at least 18 new gates in September alone, warning that they hinder access to healthcare, education, and jobs.
A 20-minute journey now takes over an hour for many, forcing residents to walk long distances or stay overnight with relatives when gates are shut for days.
Israel’s Response
The Israeli military says the barriers are intended to “manage and monitor” security in a volatile environment, claiming militants hide among civilians.
However, Palestinians say the closures and cameras at gates have disrupted livelihoods and deepened a sense of fear. “Everything has stopped,” said Ezzedine Al-Sayouri of Deir Dibwan, while others worry about family members trapped behind locked gates. (Maxim News)
