United Nations/Hyderabad, Sept 26 (Maxim News): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held separate meetings with the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman amid continuing tensions in the Gulf and disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaishankar met Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in New York on Friday and discussed the latest developments related to the Gulf conflict. He also received an update on the situation from Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi.
The meetings came as diplomatic efforts continued to restore safe navigation through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
India Raises Maritime Security and Safe Shipping
Iran and Oman, which border the Strait of Hormuz, have been involved in discussions on arrangements to restore navigation through the waterway. Oman and Iran have previously discussed a temporary navigational corridor and longer-term mechanisms for traffic management and maritime security.
Iran has also proposed a seven-day plan under which the Strait could be reopened if certain conditions, including reduced US military pressure and a ceasefire, are met. Reports said the proposal was under discussion in Washington.
The Strait remains crucial to global energy and shipping flows. Vessel traffic has fallen sharply amid the conflict, although some ships have continued to transit the waterway.
Jaishankar has separately criticised attacks on commercial shipping and highlighted the importance of safe and uninterrupted maritime routes.
At a meeting with diplomats from 25 countries to launch the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, he stressed the need to protect commercial vessels and sailors amid the regional crisis.
India has been closely monitoring the impact of the Gulf conflict because disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz can affect energy supplies, shipping routes, trade and global prices.
Jaishankar’s meetings with the Iranian and Omani foreign ministers come as diplomatic efforts continue at the United Nations to reduce tensions and restore stability in the region.
