Hyderabad, August 9: Officials closed the Jurala project gates on Sunday after flood inflows declined from upstream reservoirs.
Inflows into Jurala have fallen following reduced rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Officials said releases from Almatti and Narayanpur dams have also declined.
The project currently receives around 80,000 cusecs of water. Authorities are releasing 39,608 cusecs downstream while power generation continues through all six units.
Jurala water levels fall as inflows decline
Officials said they would not release water for irrigation because of the reduced inflows. The Jurala project serves nearly 1.03 lakh acres through its left and right canals.
Authorities said additional irrigation releases could affect drinking water availability during the next season. Therefore, they decided to conserve the available reservoir water.
The project has a full reservoir level of 318.51 metres. Its current water level stands at 317.51 metres.
Jurala has a total storage capacity of 9.65 TMC. The reservoir currently holds about 7.66 TMC.
Meanwhile, officials said the closure of the gates followed the decline in floodwater. Power generation continues with the water being released downstream.
The reduction in Jurala releases is also expected to lower inflows into the Srisailam project. Authorities will continue monitoring upstream rainfall and reservoir inflows before taking further decisions.
